“Cities are where the climate battle will largely be won or lost” - UN Secretary-General António Guterres

Cities are global economic drivers, centres of culture and commerce, and where the majority of the world’s population resides. Urban areas also account for more than 70% of global GHG emissions and approximately as much energy consumption. Further, they are some of the most acutely vulnerable areas to the impacts of climate change from rising sea levels, increasing mean temperatures, or changes in precipitation patterns and storm severity.

At 2150, our objective is to find the game-changers and sustainable investments, the Urban Tech Gigacorns, that will enable a future where technology and innovation in the Urban Stack reverse cities’ negative impacts on the planet and promote sustainability and prosperity. We achieve this by deploying Constructive Capital that targets companies with the potential to benefit billions of people, create billions in commercial value and lower gigatonnes of emissions at scale.

Impact and sustainability is at the heart of 2150’s mission, informing how we invest, our interactions with companies and investors, and the ultimate ethos of our fund. As an organisation, we rely on internal expertise and capacities to evaluate impact and promote sustainable outcomes in our portfolio companies and investor network.

Job Description

2150 is seeking a Principal to help identify and lead investment opportunities and actively support the scaling and impact of our portfolio companies. 2150 is a growing organization and the Principal will be expected to provide internal leadership, mentorship, external advocacy, and brand-building. The role includes international travel but the primary location can be alongside our existing team in London or Copenhagen.

Responsibilities include:

Leading thematic deep dives: 2150 seeks to deeply understand the greatest sustainability challenges facing the urban environment and the technologies that can help address them. To do so we continuously develop deep dives into thematic areas which allow us to be best informed when meeting founders and ecosystem partners. The Principal would be expected to proactively work with our Research team to identify opportunity areas and co-author internal and external versions of the research.

Identify and lead investments: The Principal will have the autonomy and empowerment to directly identify investment opportunities, sell those opportunities internally and negotiate and win deals in an increasingly competitive venture capital market.

Portfolio management and support: The Principal will be responsible for the proactive management of portfolio companies, including Board Seats when appropriate. You will create a trusting relationship with founders and activate the broad resources of 2150 to support their ambitions and mitigate their challenges.

Serve as a Brand Ambassador: The Principal will be expected to serve as a vocal and visible ambassador for 2150 in the technology and climate startup and investment ecosystem. This will include networking, speaking opportunities and press activity.

Mentor and leader: As a senior member of the 2150 team, the Principal will serve as a mentor and leader to others, including Associates, Analysts and interns.

What We Expect

The ideal candidate combines relevant investment experience with a complimentary network of startups and investors and a mission alignment to use technology to make our planet more efficient, resilient and sustainable. Specifically the ideal candidate is:

  • Intellectually curious: Always seeking to learn, understand and share new knowledge with other team members, ecosystem partners and portfolio companies.
  • Analytically rigorous: Data-driven decisions and ability to consolidate vast amounts of information into succinct and actionable insights.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset: Comfortable with the evolving nature of a growing organization and willing to take initiative to constantly improve the team, benefit our investments and help us all become better in service of our ecosystem and portfolio.
  • Independent but collaborative: Able to work independently but aware of the need to be inclusive and collaborative with the broader organization be that getting Partner buy-in for a deal or coaching a younger team member through a cap table.
  • Venture proven: Experience in an investment organization, having been part of several investment processes from target identification to due diligence to legal agreements and ideally, Board representation.
  • Mission alignment: The 2150 team works hard, but we do so because we can palpably grasp the potential and critical impact of the technologies that we back and we expect the full team to be mission-aligned.
