Looking to use your powers for good? Join Mission Zero Technologies (MZT) to help fight the climate crisis on the molecular frontline.

About Mission Zero Technologies

We’re a London-based climate tech startup working to reinvent carbon for a thriving planet. Since 2020, we have rapidly pioneered the world’s most versatile direct air capture (DAC) technology to recover historic CO₂ emissions from the atmosphere, anywhere at any scale. Backed by Breakthrough Energy Ventures, the XPRIZE foundation, Stripe, and the UK Government, we’ve moved a brand new climate technology from lab to commercial plants in under three years to rapidly empower carbon removal and sustainable utilisation.

About The Role
You have the opportunity to join MZT at a pivotal point in our company's history - our transition from an early-stage R&D startup into a product offering, revenue-generating company poised to rapidly scale our DAC technology across the world.

Our vision for our early stage employees is that they own the business with us (literally), grow it with us and become part of the collective story of Mission Zero, taking a catalytic role in its early history and the fight against climate change.

MZT is hiring an Operations Engineer, suited to either a recent chemical engineering graduate or an operator from a chemical industry background. Experience in servicing and repair of absorption, scrubbing, gas–liquid separation systems, or electrodialytic processes is desirable. In this role, you will operate and maintain our first technology deployments at industrial scale.

Working on sites designed and built by our engineering teams, you’ll help execute pilot plant experimental plans, focusing on troubleshooting, breakdowns, and identifying reliability challenges during extended operation. For at least the first year, the role will be primarily site-based at our Thetford site, with time spent at our East London labs and offices, and travel to customer sites across the UK and abroad. Ideally you will be local to the Thetford area or willing to relocate closer. You will demonstrate safe and effective operational and maintenance practices while working rotational shifts alongside MZT science and engineering staff.

Reporting to the Plant Operations Manager, you’ll collaborate with process, mechanical, electrical and control engineers, and feed operational insights into future designs as you become familiar with our technology.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Operating and servicing MZT deployments across our industrial Pilot Plants in Sheffield and Thetford, Norfolk - the UK’s first ever deployments of carbon negative DAC technology
  • Potentially spending time at our deployment in Alberta, Canada.
  • Assisting with operations of pilot-scale rigs at our HQ in Bethnal Green, London.
  • Maintaining and reporting on sustained operations over months of plant operations.
  • Following and demonstrating our at-site Health & Safety culture.
  • Assisting with execution of the pilot plant experimental plan in liaison with our Plant Operations Manager.
  • Reporting back on unit performances, especially regular failure modes and input ideas for product improvement.
  • Troubleshooting issues that arise, with good record keeping for required interventions to be passed back to the product improvement team.
  • Getting involved in failure analysis, using multiple methodologies to find root causes and propose improvement plans
  • Executing maintenance routines.
  • As the scope, reach and maturity of Mission Zero continues to grow, your horizons will expand to international settings as we expand the business globally.

What You’ll Need To Be Successful In This Role

  • Interest in developing skills in an exciting start-up, new technology environment, where you can rapidly grow your experience.
  • Either
    • Engineering or Chemistry Degree with suitable sub-specialty.

OR

    • Science / Engineering Level 4 or above qualification AND >3 years experience in the chemical / processing / food / aggregate or similar industry(ies)
  • A passion for optimising technical solutions.

  • Functional understanding of chemical, electrical, mechanical portions of various unit operations such as gas-liquid contacting, water treatment, membrane processes.
  • Clear communication skills.
  • Desire to build a long term career in the cleantech space with Mission Zero Technologies.
  • An ability to perform independent research when working with ambiguity or incomplete data sets to arrive at an appropriate answer;
  • Appreciation and demonstrated examples of process safety hazards and risk identification;
  • Vision for your personal development targets for the coming years.
  • Demonstrated desire to gain experience across a wide range of topics, business areas and disciplines.

Ideally You'll Also Have

  • Experience in operations and maintenance especially commissioning, start-up and testing of a variety of process plants.
  • Experience running and repairing pilot facilities.
  • Suitable safety accreditation e.g. NEBOSH.
  • Lean operational certificate, e.g. six sigma or equivalent.
  • Continuous improvement training / programme experience.
  • Experience across several processing industries.
  • Experience working with absorption, scrubbing, continuous gas-liquid systems and/or electrodialysis.
  • Good understanding of hazard and risk identification
  • Basic understanding of electrochemistry and industrial chemistry knowledge.
  • Experience of working with PLCs and SCADA systems and fault finding.
  • Experience maintaining, calibrating and commissioning process instrumentation.
